Winter Haven is a city located ten minutes away from downtown Lake Wales. Winter Haven is the home of the first Publix that opened in 1930 and Cypress Gardens which opened in 1936. Winter Haven now is just the home of the first Publix that opened and the home of Legoland.
I am doing my executive summary on Winter Haven because I realize that Lake Wales is not the only city/town that has problems. After a few hours of research, I concluded that Winter Haven's biggest issue is crime. According to a website about Winter Haven that I found on Google, I was able to research everything I needed to know about Winter Haven. It provided everything I needed to know from the last census in 2011, from population in Winter Haven compared to Florida to weather in Winter Haven compared to America.
There were some really interesting stuff I found during my research, an example would be the difference between unemployment in Winter Haven compared to Florida. Winter Haven's unemployment rate is at 9.0% and in Florida alone it is at 10.0%. Population in Winter Haven rests at approximately 33,000 people today and a huge number of those people are unemployed.
Homelessness is not a joking matter either, I used to go to school in Winter Haven ever since 2006. My mom found a job at a local Christian, private school near Legoland which was formally Cypress Gardens. My school used to do service projects occasionally at a local homeless shelter.
I was very thankful that a Christian man was running it and a lot of people were there every day. I have been through Winter Haven dozens of times and seen homeless people standing outside with signs reading that they are hungry and need money and food. It really breaks my heart to see them get ignored so much every day, at least my mom was nice enough to buy a few homeless men lunch at subway when we were leaving a Dairy Queen in Winter Haven.
I don't know much about crimes that occur in Winter Haven but I did a lot of research that shows that hundreds of thousands of crimes occur in Winter Haven. For such a small city, that is really, really scary. Crime is the biggest issue there and traffic violation is another big issue. I have seen people frequently driving on Cypress Gardens Blvd. any way they wish.
On 1/12/2013, I began to conduct my survey on the top five issues in Winter Haven on my brother and mom. My mom said that unemployment is the most important issue and gangs are the least important issue. My brother believed that littering was the most important issue and ageism was the least important issue.
The next day I decided to ask my small church their opinion on my survey. I was forced to ask my dad to fill out the survey later since one of my church members didn't want to fill out the survey. I did not want to ask my dad right away since he works in Orlando and he knows more about Orlando.
According to my results, I got 33 for crime, 20 for unemployment, 19 for littering, 25 for education and 25 for homelessness. I would have had higher results but I chose all of the topics to survey on people and then some. Out of the twenty or so topics that I surveyed the ten people on, I chose the top five that had the highest responses.
My dad gave crime a 3, education 4, lack of people in church 5, ageism 1 and bullying 2. My brother gave littering 5, crime 4 discrimination 3, obesity 2 and ageism 1. My mom gave crime 2, homelessness 3, unemployment 5, gangs 1 and education 4.
When it comes to my church on the other hand, my pastor gave crime 3, divorce 4, family issues 5, fires 2 and poverty 3. His daughter gave lack of people in church 5, unemployment 4, lack of evangelism 3, homelessness 2 and people helping in the community 1. His son gave divorce 5, materialism 5, gender issues 5, racism 5 and crime 5.
The pastor's wife gave crime 5, overpopulation 3, discrimination 5, bullying 5 and lack of people in church 5.
Our temporary music minister gave crime 5, homelessness 4, education 3, obesity 2 and littering 1. From here I only have two church members to list and one of them gave obesity 2, poverty 5, homelessness 3, lack of people in church 1 and crime 4.
Lastly the last church member that I asked in the church gave discrimination 1, poverty 2, littering 3, materialism 4 and unemployment 5.
To be more specific about how my ten people ranked the top three issues in Winter Haven which is part of my community, my family had different opinions about the top issue. I noticed that my dad was very serious about the lack of people in church in Winter Haven but my brother was under the belief that something had to be done about the littering problem that has been going on. My mom was under the belief that unemployment in Winter Haven was the biggest issue and if I was to take the survey I would say crime.
My pastor's wife believed that crime was the biggest issue in Winter Haven but my pastor believed that family issues was the major issue in Winter Haven. His daughter believed that the lack of people in church was the biggest problem but his son believed that crime was the biggest issue.
The temporary music minister in my church (Kevin Roberts) was under the pretense that homelessness was the biggest issue and the last two church members that I asked (Joe Walden and Angie Walden) believed that unemployment was the biggest issue and poverty was another really big issue.
What I definitely noticed was that, crime had the highest number of results and littering had the lowest number of results. The reason for the top five topics that I chose for my survey results template was not just because it had the highest number of results but those five issues are the biggest issues in Winter Haven today. If I was to do this survey again, I would change up the five issues that I would discuss, the location and I would not use so many issues in my survey chart template.
